LAKE CHARLES The troopers of Louisiana State Police Troop D would like to remind drivers to be extra cautious this holiday season.  With the holidays comes additional traffic on the roadways.  Historically, the holiday season has been one of the deadliest and most dangerous times on Louisiana roadways due to an increase in traffic volume as well as an increase in impaired driving.  So far this month, Troop D troopers have investigated 6 fatal crashes resulting in 7 fatalities.

Last year, forty-nine percent of traffic fatalities in our state were believed to involve impaired drivers.  Louisiana State Police Troop D is joining with other state and local law enforcement agencies to get impaired drivers off our roadways. Troopers intend to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries on our highways during this holiday season by focusing on the apprehension of impaired drivers, motorists not wearing seat belts, improperly restrained children in vehicles, and aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding and following too close.  “We have arrested over 1,200 impaired drivers in the last 12 months and will continue to work hard to get impaired and unsafe drivers off of our highways,” said Captain Chris Guillory, commander of Louisiana State Police Troop D.  “We don’t want to see anyone else hurt on our highways this holiday season.”

Troopers are asking the motoring public for help to ensure safety on our roadways.  Motorists are encouraged to buckle up, ensure everyone else is buckled up, never get behind the wheel of a vehicle impaired, and never get into a vehicle with an impaired driver.  To report impaired or aggressive drivers please dial *LSP (*577) from your cellular phone to reach the Louisiana State Police troop closest to you or contact your nearest law enforcement agency.

Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.

The men and women of the Louisiana State Police would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.
