After the last big winter storm, I think we can all get on board with making our electrical grid more robust. Our very own electrical providers, SWEPCO, take this task very seriously. One of the strategies that they are employing to make our power supply more reliable is to diversify the source of the electricity. As of this week, they are pulling electricity from the thin air in Oklahoma and sending it straight to your home.
According to the ArkLaTex Homepage, the first of three planned wind farms in Oklahoma in now online. Reportedly, SWEPCO is sending all of that sweet, sweet electrical power to Louisiana and Arkansas. The gigantic, 199-megawatt (MW) Sundance facility is up and running as we speak, but it's only the tip of the iceberg. The Maverick, and Traverse sites are under construction but should be online by late this year to early next year.
When the entire North Central Energy Facilities project is complete, it will provide 1,485-MW of power for our region. Just to put that into perspective, SWEPCO produces just 651 MW in Louisiana. This wind powered boost will significantly increase the output to the Sportsman's Paradise.
