BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A reshaping of the Louisiana House's 105 districts to match the latest census data is up for debate on the House floor.

Because  Governor  Jindal  supports  a  new Congressional  map  that maintains two districts in northern Louisiana,  most  any other plan will likely fail.

Four Republican Louisiana congressmen have backed a redistricting plan that would preserve two north Louisiana-based congressional districts, despite continued population loss in the area.

In addition to drawing new state and federal district lines, state lawmakers must also amend a large number of state statutes that are tied to population. House Speaker Jim Tucker says many of the laws direct sales & hotel taxes, determine salaries paid to public officials and regulate traffic on roads & ferries.

As they begin work on the job of redistricting, state lawmakers are already busy pre-filing bills for the regular session that begins next month.

Today marks the second day of the special legislative session held once every 10 years to deal with the redistricting of the state following the once every decade U.S. Census. Governor Bobby Jindal opened the session yesterday in Baton Rouge saying it was important the redistricting process be done as openly, transparently and fairly as possible.
