This year is the third annual event for the Bicycle Safety Festival which will take place at Parc Putnam this Saturday, June 2 from 9 o'clock in the morning until noon.

Whether you are one or one hundred, you are invited out to this year's festival that will focus on making sure that your bicycle is safe for the roadway, how to find and make sure that your helmet fits and basic safety instructions.

You are encourage to bring your bike or ride it to Parc Putnam, and if you do, you will be able to register for bicycle with the Lafayette Police Department who will be in attendance. Registration makes it easier to return your bike to you if it is lost or stolen.

This free event will feature multiple activites that include food, refreshments, music, a guided bike tour which is put on by the TRAIL (Transportation Recreation Alternatives in Louisiana) group, and a bike obstacle course for the younger bike riders.

Organizer Blake David says,

"The aim of this event is to help cyclists and motorists become more knowledgeable about bicycle safety and the rules of the road. As Lafayette embraces a more bicycle-oriented mindset, bicycyle awareness is becoming even more essential. Through this approach, we can make the roads safer for all users."

There will also be a free ride for the adults that starts at 7:30 Saturday morning at Parc Putnam that will give each person the option of going either 16, 26, 36 or 50 miles. You will be able to see plenty of scenery along the way as you pedal down Bayou Tortue Road and around the Acadiana Regional Airport. You should arrive at the Parc Putnam entrance at 7 o'clock that morning if you are planning to ride.
