UL Softball Hammers Georgia St., 12-0
The 5th-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun softball team picked-up another road win on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Georgia St. Panthers, 12-0, in Atlanta, Georgia.
The victory, in 5-inning, mercy-rule fashion, gave Louisiana a sweep in the three-game, weekend, Sun Belt Conference series, after capturing a doubleheader from Georgia St. on Saturday, by scores of 4-1, and 6-5.
The wins extends the Cajuns’ conference win streak to 9 games, while improving their overall win streak to seven games.
The victory also gives Louisiana 18 wins, all-time, in 20 games against Georgia St., while improving their current win streak over the Panthers to 14 games, and their Sun Belt Conference record against GSU to a perfect 10-0.
Louisiana jumped on top in the top half of the first inning, when senior first baseman Kelsey Vincent launched a solo home run, her 9th of the season, to grab a quick 1-0 lead.
The Cajuns added to their lead in the top half of the second inning, scoring 6 runs on 4 hits, behind two home runs in the frame, including a three-run shot by senior left-fielder Shellie Landry, her 10th of the season, and a solo bomb by sophomore centerfielder Aleah Craighton, her 13th, to extend their advantage to 7-0.
Louisiana put the game completely away in the top half of the 5th inning, scoring 5 runs on 4 hits, with sophomore shortstop D.J. Sanders driving home two runs with a double.
That was more than enough for the Cajuns, who went on to the 5-inning, mercy-rule win.
The Cajuns, who outhit the Panthers, 10-4, were led at the plate by Vincent, Landry, and Craighton, who all homered, as UL finished the weekend with 7 home runs.
Alex Stewart (17-1) recorded the win in the circle for Louisiana, tossing 4 innings of two-hit, shutout softball, without allowing a walk.
Annie Davis (4-6) suffered the loss for Georgia St., allowing 6 runs on 4 hits in 1.1 innings.
With the win, Louisiana improved to 32-3, overall, and 13-1 in Sun Belt Conference play, while Georgia St. fell to 19-22, and 4-8, respectively.
The Cajuns return to action next weekend, when they travel to Gainesville, Florida to take on the Florida Gators, in a three-game, non-conference series.
