Because of the coronavirus threat across the state and the nation, many businesses have had to shut down or reduce their workforce. This has resulted in quite a few layoffs during this past week. The Louisiana Workforce Commission held a news conference yesterday to address concerns of those who may be out of work because of the virus.

If you were laid off during this week, the week of March 16th through the 20th, you will have until 5 pm to file an unemployment claim with the state. Louisiana Workforce officials ask that you try to file online. You may do that here.

They also remind you that the website could be moving very slow because of the high volume of traffic. Still, filing online is better than attempting to come into an LWF office. If you don't have the ability to get online you may call (866) 783-5567. Extra staffers have been brought on board to expedite those calls.

One other thing, be sure you answer "YES" to this question when filling out your application.

Are you filing for Unemployment Insurance benefits for reasons related to COVID-19 (Coronavirus)?

Depending on your particular circumstances you could be eligible for up to $247 a week. Of course, each individual situation is different. LWC officials say they have waived their normal week-long waiting period so that claims can be processed immediately.
