A Breaux Bridge man was killed after he was struck from behind by a suspected impaired driver while riding his bicycle.

According to Louisiana State Police Troop I spokesperson Brooks David, 28-year-old Tyrone Celestine was riding his bicycle east on La. Hwy. 328 late Friday night when he was struck from behind by a truck driven by 52-year-old Lawrence Sam of Breaux Bridge.

Celestine was thrown from his bicycle and received serious injuries. He was taken to a hospital where he later died, David said.

David said a chemical breath test revealed Sam was over the legal limit for impairment at the time of the crash.

Sam was charged with careless operation, open alcoholic container and vehicular homicide. He was booked at the St. Martin Parish Jail without incident.
