ST. MARTINVILLE – A child is in critical condition after being struck in a hit-and-run accident early Monday morning, according to the St. Martinville Police Department. The suspect, identified as 64-year-old Donna Bourque of St. Martinville, has been arrested and charged with hit and run resulting in serious bodily injury. According to police, her bond has been set at $1 million.

The incident occurred around 6:26 a.m. on Main Street near the intersection of Mimosa Lane. Police report that Bourque ignored the flashing lights and stop signals of a school bus, striking the child before fleeing the scene. Using footage from city cameras, officers were able to identify both the vehicle and the driver, leading to Bourque's arrest later that day.

Police Chief Ricky Martin shared that the young victim suffered multiple severe injuries, including a ruptured spleen, a fractured collarbone, a broken rib, and broken legs. The child was awaiting surgery as of last night (Feb 10).

“This was an avoidable tragedy,” Chief Martin said. “Drivers need to pay attention to school buses and follow the law to ensure the safety of children.”

The St. Martinville Police Department is urging drivers to remain vigilant around school buses and adhere to traffic laws designed to protect students.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with additional information about the incident is encouraged to contact the St. Martinville Police Department.
