Crowley Police Chief K.P. Gibson announced Wednesday morning he will run for sheriff of Acadia Parish.

In a release sent to members of the media, Gibson said his campaign will center on increasing the number of deputies on patrol in an effort to create a more "proactive patrol" and to yield a quicker response time in calls of emergency.

"This will also provide a safer environment for our first responders to make sure that they return to their families safely," Gibson said.

Gibson also said his campaign will focus on the problem of illegal narcotics in the community, which he said contributes to nearly 70 percent of crimes.

Gibson started his law enforcement career in 1991 with the Lafayette Police Department. He climbed up the law enforcement career ladder until his election in 2002 as police chief in Crowley.
