LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL News) - The roadway at SE Evangeline Thruway and Bellot Street has been re-opened after Lafayette police cleared a major accident that took the life of a bicyclist.

According to the original statement from LPD, a Ford truck struck a female bicyclist on Thursday morning, closing down that portion of roadway and creating significant delays.

ORIGINAL STORY

The Lafayette Police Department is investigating a tragic accident that claimed the life of a bicyclist this morning (Jan. 2).

According to Lafayette Police Sgt. Robin Green, the crash happened around 8:19 a.m. at the intersection of SE Evangeline Thruway and Bellot Street. According to initial reports, a Ford F-450 truck pulling a trailer struck a female bicyclist. When officers arrived, they found the bicyclist deceased at the scene.

Traffic Delays

The accident has caused significant traffic delays in the area. All southbound lanes of the SE Evangeline Thruway are currently closed between Willow Street and Goldman Street. Police advise drivers to avoid the area and use alternative routes while the investigation continues.

Ongoing Investigation

Investigators with the Lafayette Police Department remain on the scene, working to determine the details of the incident. Green says updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
