LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL News) - Roads are closed at the I-10 overpass on NW Evangeline/I-49 northbound after large vehicle struck the overpass.

Lafayette Consolidated Government has closed the northbound and southbound lanes after an 18-wheeler carrying a large load struck the overpass of I-10 eastbound. That eastbound lane is also closed.

Motorists are encouraged to take an alternate route, LGC said in a statement Tuesday evening.

Traffic congestion has vehicles currently on the road at a standstill. Alternate route for those traveling northbound include Louisiana Ave. and University Ave. There is currently no timeline for reopening the roadway, but LCG has said they will announce when they do get the situation cleared.

It's not the first time the overpass has been struck. One such incident happened in 2023, forcing long-term closures while the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development fixed the overpass.
