(KMDL-FM) - Over the last couple of weeks, there have been multiple wildfires across Louisiana, prompting officials to remind citizens to avoid outdoor burning and any activities that could spark new fires.

Wildfires Prompt Statewide Safety Warnings

In St. Tammany Parish near Abita Springs and Lacombe, more than 400 acres were burned this past weekend. Significant fires were also confirmed in Beauregard Parish, Webster Parish, Livingston Parish, and Allen Parish.

Louisiana Parishes Currently Under Burn Bans

As a result of the dry conditions, the Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office has placed the following parishes across the state are under burn bans:

  • Acadia
  • Allen
  • Avoyelles
  • Beauregard
  • Bossier
  • Calcasieu
  • De Soto
  • Jeff Davis
  • Rapides
  • Red River
  • Sabine
  • St. Helena
  • St. Landry
  • St. Martin
  • Tangipahoa
  • Vermilion
  • Vernon
  • Webster
  • Winn

What “Open Burning” Means for Residents

If you are in one of these parishes, you are restricted from open burning. That means you can't burn material outside on open ground without a container for the flame.

Where open burning is allowed in local ordinances, the State Fire Marshal reminds residents that the only legal items you can burn in Louisiana are vegetation and ordinary yard waste items like leaves, tree branches, grass clippings, etc.

Items You Are Not Allowed to Burn in Louisiana

If you do plan to burn anything in your yard, you should be aware that there are several items you shouldn't put in the pile.

According to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, items not allowed to be burned include:

  • Plastic and other synthetic materials
  • Tires and other rubber products
  • Paints, household, and agricultural chemicals
  • Asphalt shingles, heavy oils, wire
  • Newspaper, cardboard, and other paper products
  • Buildings and mobile homes
