Louisiana DOTD Worker Killed in Knife Attack on I-10
Members of the Louisiana Department of Transportation family are mourning the loss of one of their own following a bizarre incident that happened on Interstate 10 Sunday afternoon near Port Allen. According to reports, a Department of Transportation Motorist Assist Patrol employee was fatally stabbed and his attacker was fatally wounded by deputies from the West Baton Rouge Sheriff's Department.
A State Police spokesperson told the Louisiana Radio Network that West Baton Rouge Parish Deputies were called to the scene about Noon on Sunday and when they arrived they encountered an individual who was aggressively attacking the DOTD MAP worker.
When the attacker did not respond to law enforcement commands officers made the decision to use deadly force to subdue the attacker. Both the attacker and the DOTD worker were transported to a Baton Rouge area hospital where both succumbed to their injuries.
WAFB Television in Baton Rouge says the DOTD worker that was killed in the incident was identified by family members as Darrell Guillory. Guillory is reported to be a 66-year-old former Baton Rouge police officer. West Baton Rouge Parish Deputies believe that Guillory was assisting the motorist before the stabbing occurred. There is still no clear motive for what sparked the altercation.
Louisiana Department of Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson released this statement following the incident.
The entire DOTD family extends our thoughts and prayers on the passing of a member of our Motorist Assistance Patrol. Our Motorist Assistance Patrol staff put their life on the line every day in an effort to assist citizens in need. In the days ahead, DOTD asks for your prayers and support for all those affected by today’s incident. This is an active state police investigation.
