More Storms Likely For South Louisiana Today, Some Could Severe
Forecasters with the National Weather Service Office in Lake Charles, Louisiana have already issued severe weather warnings for portions of the coastal waters south of Cameron and Vermilion Parish this morning. According to their projections, some of those strong storms could be moving onshore throughout the morning and bring with them the threat of severe storms along the I-10 corridor today.
The National Weather Service radar out of Lake Charles, at 0300 AM showed strong storms not only offshore but just south of the city of Lake Charles. These storms were moving rapidly toward the east and will affect residents of Jeff Davis, Acadia, and Lafayette parishes during the early morning hours.
The Storm Prediction Center has a portion of South Louisiana included in its marginal risk for severe weather today. Chief Meteorologist Rob Perillo of KATC Television has suggested in his blog on the station's website that the early morning hours will be the busiest for storms in South Louisiana. Most of the heavy storms, according to Perillo's post should move away from the area by midday today.
The National Weather Service forecast for Lake Charles and Lafayette includes a 70% chance of rain and storms before noon today. Some of those storms could contain gusty winds and frequent lightning, and there is a potential for small hail with these storms too.
Once the storms move out of the area residents of South Louisiana can expect a wind shift and cooler conditions. Forecasters say the winds will become northerly later today and skies will begin to clear. However, those winds will be gusting as high as 30 mph during the afternoon hours. The forecast for tonight and Wednesday does suggest that winds will lay down just a bit but it will still be quite breezy this evening and tomorrow.
Overnight low temperatures will fall into the 50s tonight and on Wednesday but a gradual return to warmer temperatures will take place as the week progresses. The remainder of the work week appears to be rather calm with mostly sunny skies. There will be a slight risk of rain showers returning to the area by late in the week and for the weekend.
