(KMDL-FM) A popular brand of " do it yourself" home security cameras is the subject of a major recall this morning. The concern of federal regulators is that Wyze Labs security cameras sold at Home Depot, Best Buy, and Amazon could catch on fire.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission is urging all consumers who may have purchased and already installed camera systems in and around their homes to review and reconsider the devices due to the potential risk of injury or death.

The issue prompting the recall stems from incorrect assembly instructions. I know, I wondered how many people actually read the directions before installing the cameras, but I know some always install items by the book. In this case, the book is wrong, and that's why your new home security camera is now your new at-home fire risk.

The incorrect instructions could lead consumers to accidentally puncture the metal casing on one of the units' lithium-ion batteries. Should that casing be breached, there is a strong possibility that the battery could fail by overheating quickly and, during that process, get hot enough to cause a fire.

How Do I Know if My Home Security Camera Has Been Recalled?

Wyze Labs has reported 13 such incidents involving the security cameras. The company says over 321,000 units have been sold in the United States. Here is what the recalled cameras look like.

The cameras have a motorized pan-and-tilt function, and there is also an integrated solar panel. The model name, “WYZESCPWH”, can be found printed on the back of the camera unit.
