(Lafayette, Louisiana)- When you think of the food scene/food culture in Lafayette, Louisiana the first thing that comes to mind is rice and gravy or fried/boiled seafood. Here in Cajun country, the go-to options for seafood include crawfish, crabs, catfish, and shrimp. With the love of seafood here in Cajun country, one would assume that maybe there are some good sushi restaurants. And let me tell you there are some great sushi places around town.

The fact that this area is a seafood hub helps the community understand that sushi is amazing. And with the restaurants, many have started to include some Louisiana options with the traditional sushi items. So where are the best sushi restaurants in Lafayette? Well, don't worry here are the top 5 sushi restaurants in Lafayette, Louisiana according to Yelp. (This list will only include restaurants in Lafayette, Louisiana)

5. Tsunami Sushi

With the number five spot, we have Tsunami Sushi. Now personally I would have Tsunami coming in higher. For me, I would have Tsunami top 3 but this is according to Yelp. But this is one of the best places in Lafayette to take someone on a date. The atmosphere is incredible and the food although expensive is just flat-out delicious. Tsunami is located at 412 Jefferson Street.

Here's a local review: If you're looking for fancy sushi and Japanese fusion cuisine, tsunami is your place. This hip little sushi spot in downtown Lafayette is sure to please even a sushi snob. Everything I have tried has been delicious. The sushi is fresh and creative, and the appetizers are absolutely amazing. They have a huge selection of sake if you enjoy that but also a good craft beer selection. One of my favorite appetizers that I have pretty much turned into my fave entrée is the eggplant miso with shrimp. This sweet yet savory dish is eggplant cooked to sheer perfection! I also appreciate that there are plenty of sushi options that don't contain that snow crab mush, that I cannot seem to escape in Acadiana. Literally, every roll that most restaurants in this area make have imitation crab in it. I appreciate that Tsunami has more premium sushi recipes than most restaurants I've tried in the South. If hip & creative sushi is your thing, check them out!

4. NHI Taste Of Asia

At the number four spot, we have NHI Taste Of Asia. This is one of the newer restaurants in Lafayette. NHI does a great job of giving you not just one taste of Asian cuisine but multiple. Not only is the sushi great but you can also get a great plate of pad thai as well as some ramen. But just because you can get a taste of all sorts of Asian flavors doesn't mean the sushi is poor or lackluster. The sushi at NHI is flat-out superb. Definitely worth the price. NHI is located at 114 Meadow Farm Rd Ste 100 Lafayette, LA 70508

Here's a local review: Nhi has a little bit of everything - sushi, ramen, hibachi, noodle dishes, bento boxes. The lemongrass beef skewers are full of flavor. Osumashi soup is yummy (both our kids love it). Bento boxes for lunch are perfect portions. Sushi is fresh. We usually get yellowtail nigiri/sashimi. Fiery Pacific roll is spicy and so good. BOGO half off on sushi rolls for lunch (Tues-Fri 11a-3p). The service is great. Shout out to Val - he's friendly and makes great drinks! The decor is trendy and fun. We've tried a lot and we keep going back. Highly recommend!

Coming in at number three, we have Oishi Sushi. Oishi is located at 924 Kaliste Saloom Road. I've personally been to Oishi numerous times. What makes Oishi special is the head chef. He values every ingredient and wants to make sure you have a great traditional sushi experience.

Here's one review: "Mr. Chen is a gift from God!!! Oishi is really Lafayette's hidden gem! Every single time my husband and I are in Lafayette, we pop in to have some of the best sushi I've ever tasted. Oishi is reasonably priced, non-gimmicky, and has a really relaxing atmosphere. It's small, so if you have a party or big group... I wouldn't suggest it... but he knocks out "to go" orders pretty quick... so that's always an option. His raw fish is always ridiculously fresh and his cuts for sashimi are thin enough not to be chewy! I can't recommend this place enough!"

At the number two spot, we have Kirin Sushi Steakhouse. Now this is the only place on the list that I have not personally been to. But I have heard from numerous friends that this place is great and now I have to try it. Kirin is located 3366 Verot School Rd Ste 102 Lafayette, LA 70508.

Here's a local review: Hidden gem that my wife and I got the chance to experience.  Greeted by a warm staff, got the feeling of family. Had the feel of a takeout with the surprising very affordable appetizers, and here we go, Wow value for your money is heightened with the quality and flavor. The Tuna tataki nice flavor, and big chunks of tuna, definitely see the chef making this his own recipe, the added cucumber was a nice touch. The snow crab salad was good and a nice portion to share. Fried Calamari is nicely seasoned. The chicken and steak combo was great, the steak cooked nicely, fried rice was good. The sushi special was also a stand-out. This is definitely onto something special, no frills just great food.

1. Fuji Sushi House

With the number one spot, we have Fuji Sushi House. I personally would rank Fuji number four on my top five but I totally understand why Fuji made the number one spot. The seafood is always fresh and the other ingredients all have a very clean taste to it. With every piece of sushi at Fuji you can taste the care they put into it. Also, the appetizers at Fuji are also amazing. Fuji is located at 4416 Johnston St Ste 8A Lafayette, LA 70503.

Here's a local review: My girlfriend and I wanted to come to Lafayette for the day to antique shop and eat lunch. We read the reviews, and nothing could've prepared me for how AMAZING this place was. The inside is cozy, and extremely clean. The waitress was so kind and attentive. She gave us hot towels before and after our meal, and even unwrapped our napkins to place in our laps. We ordered the clear soup and pork gyoza for an appetizer. and WOW. so delicious. I have never liked gyoza but this place made me LOVE it. I ordered a tuna roll, and pork fried rice. The tuna roll was fresh and beautifully made. The pork fried rice was like nothing i've ever tasted before. They added red, green, and yellow bell peppers in it and it made the flavor of the rice more than amazing. Truly makes your taste buds dance. My girlfriend got the Pinky roll. It's fried shrimp, chicken tempura, and crunchies. It was so delicious, and again, beautifully rolled. I will definitely come back here. They deserve ALL the service.
