If you've been stuck in traffic on Johnston Street near UL lately, you’re not alone—and it’s not ending anytime soon. Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) announced that the closure of the southbound exterior lane and shoulder in the busy 1100 block of Johnston Street, just north of University Avenue, will remain in effect through January 31, 2025. The closure, which began on December 2, was originally scheduled to wrap up by December 20 but has been extended due to additional drainage work.

LCG explains that the lane restriction is part of the Downtown Drainage Inlet Replacement Project, which is necessary to improve the drainage catch basin in the area. Southern Constructors, the project contractor, recently added work to include an additional drainage structure, extending the timeline.

The affected section of Johnston Street is a major thoroughfare in Lafayette, particularly during the holiday season when traffic is already heavier than usual. With shoppers, commuters, and holiday travelers all sharing the road, the extended closure has created significant slowdowns, especially during peak hours.

Many residents have reported long waits and congested traffic stretching well beyond the work zone. “It’s been a mess during lunch and after work,” said one KPEL listener. “With holiday shopping traffic, it feels like it’s worse than ever.”

LCG urges drivers to use caution, remain patient, and consider alternate routes to avoid the bottleneck. Motorists are reminded to stay alert when traveling through the work zone for their safety and the safety of construction crews.

For now, drivers will need to adjust their travel plans and prepare for delays on Johnston Street until the work is completed early next year.
