Lafayette City Council Votes to Support Removal of Mouton Statue
In a vote that happened well after midnight, the Lafayette City Council agreed unanimously to support Mayor-President Josh Guillory’s plan to move the Confederate-era Alfred Mouton statue in Downtown Lafayette. Guillory has been praised by some and criticized by others for the announcement that comes as similar statues are being dismantled around the country.
In Shreveport, local leaders reached an agreement with the local Daughters of the Confederacy to remove a monument outside the Caddo Parish Courthouse. Another Confederate statue in Alexandria will be removed as well.
Also at last night's meeting, Pleading to keep community rec centers and even a call to DEFUND city hall. It’s all over the plan by the Guillory administration to close four rec centers on the northside of Lafayette to save money. It’s the latest round of announced cuts as LCG adjusts to a drop in tax revenue to support services. The Domingue Recreation Center, Heymann Park Recreation Center, J. Carlton James Activity Center, and George Bowles Activity Center are scheduled to close on November 1st when the next fiscal year begins.
You can watch the full meetings from last night (and early this morning) on the LCG website. CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL VIDEOS
