Louisiana Supreme Court building to be named after justice

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana's Supreme Court building in New Orleans will be renamed after a justice whose tenure was the longest in the court's history.

State lawmakers have agreed to name the French Quarter building after former Chief Justice Pascal F. Calogero Jr., who died last year.

Calogero served on the state Supreme Court for 36 years, including 18 as chief justice. He retired in 2008.

Calogero was first elected to the Supreme Court in 1972. During his tenure, he participated in more than 6,000 oral arguments and wrote more than 1,000 majority opinions, concurrences and dissents.

The Senate gave the naming bill by Republican Rep. Julie Stokes final passage with a 38-0 vote Sunday. The House had passed it 85-0.
