LSU football continues its storied tradition of honoring top playmakers with the No. 7 jersey, but this year, the Tigers are making history. For the first time ever, the prestigious number will be worn by not one, but two standout players: junior linebacker Harold Perkins and junior left tackle Will Campbell.

On Thursday, Perkins, a junior linebacker, was officially named a recipient of the No. 7 jersey. Perkins, who has already garnered significant recognition as an AP Preseason first-team All-American, had an outstanding season last year, racking up 75 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and 13 tackles for loss. He was named to the All-SEC second team and earned freshman All-American honors in 2022 after recording 7.5 sacks. LSU head coach Brian Kelly praised Perkins for his leadership and impact on the field.

"He has uplifted the other 10 players on the defensive side of the ball, and he’s ready to wear this jersey," Kelly said following LSU's practice at Tiger Stadium on Thursday.

The decision to award the No. 7 jersey to both Perkins and Campbell reflects their significant contributions to the team. Campbell, who was given the jersey before last season, is known for his work ethic and ability to set the tone for the defense. Campbell admired Perkins, highlighting his dynamic presence on the field.

"He comes to work and sets the tone for us every day on defense," Campbell said. "I think he’s the most electrifying player in college football, and this year, he’s going to show it."

The No. 7 jersey at LSU is a symbol of excellence, traditionally given to the top playmaker on the roster. Some of the greatest Tigers, including Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu, Leonard Fournette, and Derek Stingley, have worn the number. Coach Kelly emphasized that the honor of wearing No. 7 goes beyond just individual talent.

"(This number) is about somebody that brings an incredible ability, is from the state, and calls Louisiana his home. This number is about a player that brings up others around him," Kelly stated. "You can’t just be a great player - if it’s just about him - the No. 7 jersey doesn’t work. You have to bring others up around him, and that’s what Campbell and Perkins do. They elevate the play of those around them."

In addition to the historic No. 7 announcement, LSU also revealed that senior linebacker Greg Penn and graduate senior running back Josh Williams will wear the No. 18 jersey this season, an honor reserved for players who demonstrate high character and leadership skills.
