BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU plans to erect a statue of longtime head baseball coach Skip Bertman on campus.

The university said in a news release Saturday that the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame Committee unanimously approved the proposal for a statute honoring Bertman.

The Advocate reports that Bertman is one of only 10 athletes or coaches to have his jersey retired by LSU, which also has erected statues of former basketball stars Shaquille O'Neal and Bob Pettit.

Details on the design and construction of Bertman's statue weren't immediately released.

Bertman led the Tigers to five national championships during his 18 seasons as head coach of the baseball team, from 1984 to 2001.

The school said he has the highest winning percentage in SEC history, with a career record of 870-330-3.
