Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense will be hosting the Lafayette March For Our Lives in Girard Park at 10 a.m. on March 24.

Students and families from Lafayette and the Acadiana region will join hundreds of other communities nationwide for a rally to demand that their lives become a priority.

Organizers say they want safety to become a priority as well.

Their goals include working to end gun violence, and they are hoping to prevent school shootings like the one that took 17 lives in Parkland, Florida.

This Wednesday students from across the country are planning to stage walk outs at their schools for 17 minutes as a way to commerate the 17 lives that were lost.

The Lafayette Parish School Board voted to have a moment of silence this Wednesday to honor the victims of the shooting. They are also encouraging students to wear blue.

The decision has had mixed reactiions in the community.

The School Board clarified their position saying if a student walks out of class, and does so without interupting anyone else, then they will be not be subject to disciplinary action.
