Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson Series Picked Up By HBO
It almost sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Two of America’s most charming Southern-flavored actors doing a buddy-detective story on cable? Perhaps an oversimplification, but for now it seems like HBO has won the bidding war to the high-profile new drama ‘True Detective,’ written by ‘The Killing‘s own Nic Pizzolato.
Deadline broke the news, that HBO has added to its already-impressive roster by picking up the decade-spanning detective drama ‘True Detective’ to series with an eight episode order. Starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, ‘True Detective’ follows two detectives, Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson), whose lives intertwine during a seventeen-year hunt for a Louisiana serial killer. Their investigation of a gruesome murder in 1995 will be intercut with testimony from the detectives in 2012, when the case has been reopened.
Unlike ‘The Killing,’ it is said that ‘True Detective will wrap up the mystery inherent to the plot within the first season, with subsequent seasons utilizing the same structure but new characters and story. The series is likely to begin production right away, with Cary Fukunaga (‘Jane Eyre’) on board to direct all episodes.
Previously, McConaughey and Harrelson have worked together in ‘Edtv’ and ‘Surfer, Dude,’ whereas ‘True Detective’ marks the former’s first occasion as a TV series regular. Harrelson on the other hand, first rose to prominence as a regular on ‘Cheers’ all those years ago.
What say you? Does HBO have another hit on their hands, or does the thought of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson working together seem too goofy to work as a serious drama? Perhaps you’d like another excuse for us to have to carefully spell McConaughey! Either way, give us your thoughts in the comments!
