Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins Talks About A US Senate Run

Right now, United Senator Bill Cassidy doesn't appear to have a lot of pressure on him in his race for reelection this year. Cassidy is currently set to face off with four others right now, all Democrats, and all have been described as "little-known" by The Advocate.

But in a new report from The Advocate, the biggest threat to Cassidy could be Shreveport's Mayor.

According to The Advocate, Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins might be the biggest threat to Cassidy's Senate seat, if Perkins decides to run. But it's not complete speculation either. Perkins told The Advocate:

“I have been approached by a lot of people from all over the state asking me to step up. In this moment of overlapping crisis, there is a lot to consider. Ultimately, I want to do what’s best for the city of Shreveport.”

Political insiders across the state have suggested that the current climate across the country will lead to a higher-than-average turnout with Black voters, with conventional political wisdom suggesting that would be a bump for a Democratic candidate. Additionally, this November will be a Presidential election as well, which always draws an increased number of voters to cast ballots.

With these factors, some believe that Cassidy could be vulnerable to a strong challenger, which is why some political experts expected the Democratic party to recruit former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, but it sounds like Landrieu will not be taking part in the race.

The Advocate called Perkin's resume "sterling", pointing to his military career, and Harvard Law degree. They infer that he would be the front-runner to challenge Cassidy, ahead of 4 other Democrats. The others who are currently planning to take on Cassidy are  Antoine Pierce, Peter Wenstrup, Drew Knight and Dartanyon Williams.

When KEEL News reached out to Senator Cassidy's campaign for comment, the campaign said they have no comment at this time.
