Measles Outbreak In Texas

Sadly, the measles outbreak in Texas recently claimed its first victim, an unvaccinated school aged child in Lubbock, Texas.

To date, there are 124 confirmed cases of measles across 9 Texas Counties.

Most of the Texas measles cases are in children age 5 to 17.

According to CNN, "Eighteen people have been hospitalized so far in the outbreak. All have been unvaccinated."

The measles outbreak has now extended into eastern New Mexico, with nine confirmed cases, bringing the total to over 130 infections between New Mexico and Texas.

Although the spread into New Mexico is an unfortunate shift East, Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy is warning Louisiana that the measles outbreak is coming our way.

“'The measles outbreak that started in West Texas and New Mexico is now moving across I-10 and it’s now in San Antonio, which means it’s moving to us,' Cassidy said during a conference call with reporters Tuesday.

'It’s going to be in Houston. It’s going to be in Lake Charles. It’s going to be in (Lafayette) and Baton Rouge, and then it’s going to go up I-49 to Shreveport.'”

Cassidy goes on to urge pregnant mothers in Louisiana to speak with their physicians to see if they need a measles booster shot.

What Are The Symptoms Of Measles

Measles is a rare disease today because of decades of vaccinations, but measles remains highly contagious and can be potentially deadly.

Measles symptoms typically appear 7–14 days after infection, and the symptoms progress in stages.

The symptoms of measles include high fever, cough, runny nose, sore through, watery red eyes.

Two or three days before the measles rash appears on the skin, the disease can be detected by identifying small white spots with a bluish-white center that appear inside the mouth on the inner cheeks inside of the mouth.
