LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL News) - The people of Louisiana Senate District 23 will have a not-so-new face representing them in Baton Rouge this coming Legislative Session, after current District 45 Representative Brach Myers won a special election Saturday. The seat was left open after Jean-Paul Coussan won a special election back in November 2024 to fill the remaining term of District 2 Commissioner Craig Greene, who stepped down.

Myers bested Broussard Council Member Jesse Regan in what was a messy race at times, with outside groups getting involved in the contentious election. According to the Secretary of State's website, with all 70 precincts reporting, Myers won 55% of the 12,360 votes cast, with 6,769, while Regan counted 5,591 votes for around 45%.

"We want to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who knocked on doors, made phone calls, supported, voted, and believed in this campaign and what we stand for," Myers said in a statement posted to his social media accounts. He added, "Throughout this journey, we chose to take the high road—not because it was easy, but because it was right. We knew our children, our communities, and future leaders were watching."
Three candidates initially qualified to run for the seat. Democrat Kristopher Harrison launched a campaign late last year, only to be ultimately disqualified after his candidacy was challenged by a third-party.

Also holding an election Saturday was East Baton Rouge, where residents of District 14 voted for Cleo Fields' replacement after he was elected to Congress. Larry Selders won that seat, beating out his challengers with 62% of the vote.
