Ole Miss Upsets LSU, 27-24
Chief Brown #8 of the Ole Miss Rebels celebrates an interception against the LSU Tigers during a game at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on October 19, 2013 in Oxford, Mississippi
Andrew Ritter kicked a 41-yard field goal with :02 remaining, to lift the Ole Miss Rebels to a 27-24 upset victory over the sixth-ranked LSU Tigers, in SEC action on Saturday night, at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi.
Ritter was responsible for the first points of the game, putting through a 28-yard field goal at the 1:23 mark of the first quarter that gave Ole Miss a 3-0 lead.
The Rebels scored the only points of the second quarter, when Nicholas Parker caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Barry Brunetti, giving them a 10-0 halftime advantage.
Ole Miss extended it's lead to 17-0 at the 9:29 mark of the third period, when Jaylen Walton scored on a 3-yard touchdown run, and the Rebels looked as if they might runaway and hide.
LSU responded with 14 unanswered points however, courtesy of two touchdown runs, the first coming on a 1-yard plunge by Kenny Hilliard at the 6:16 mark, and the second coming on a 3-yard score by Jeremy Hill at the 3:09 mark, cutting the Ole Miss lead to 17-14.
The Rebels answered, with only :03 remaining in the third period however, when Walton ran in his second touchdown of the night, this one from 26 yards out, to give Ole Miss a 24-14 advantage through three frames.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Tigers took advantage of a recovered muffed punt, as Colby Delahoussaye kicked a 41-yard field goal, trimming the Ole Miss lead to 24-17 at the 11:22 mark of the final quarter.
LSU tied it at the 3:19 mark, when quarterback Zach Mettenberger hit Jarvis Landry with a 4-yard touchdown toss, knotting the score, 24-24.
Ole Miss was efficient on their final drive, going 61 yards on 13 plays, and taking 3:17 off the clock, while setting up Ritter for the game-winner.
The Rebels out-gained the Tigers, in terms of total yards, 522-388, including 349-274 advantage in passing yards, as well as a 173-114 cushion in rushing yards.
Quarterback Bo Wallace paved the way for Ole Miss, completing 30-of-39 passes, for 346 yards, while Walton gained 103 yards on the ground, to go along with the two touchdown runs.
In a losing cause for LSU, Mettenberger was 19-of-33 through the air, for 274 yards, with a touchdown, but was also intercepted three times.
With the victory, the Rebels snap a three-game losing streak, and improve to 4-3, overall, and 2-3 in SEC play, while LSU fell to 6-2, overall, and 3-2 in league play.
