PATTERSON, La. (AP) — A south Louisiana police chief says an inmate apparently tampered with the water system in the Patterson jail, touching off the sprinklers and causing a flood that briefly evacuated the facility.

Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle tells The Daily Review of Morgan City that the sprinklers filled the jail with about three inches of water Sunday evening.

He says the sprinklers were turned off once the jail was evacuated. LaSalle says inmates were back in their cells within three hours, and nobody was hurt.

LaSalle says investigators are reviewing surveillance video to try to identify whoever caused the sprinklers to go off.
