Lafayette Consolidated Government Offering Deal on Rain Barrels
May 9 is the deadline for residents of the city of Lafayette and unincorporated areas to sign up for a rain barrel at the subsidized price of $34.50.
If you love flowers, or if you have a vegetable garden, these barrels are a great way to catch rainwater to nourish the projects in your yard.
By having a rain barrel you can conserve water and save yourself money. You won't have to use the hose to water your plants and veggies.
According to a press release from the Lafayette Consolidated Government, rain barrels also help to reduce the amount of stormwater runoff.
If you would like to purchase one of the discounted barrels, click here. Just remember that you will need to go to pick up your barrel on Saturday, May 22. You will be able to pick it up at the Dean Domingues Compost Facility which can be found at 400 Dugas Road.
According to officials with the Lafayette government, each household in the city of Lafayette and the unincorporated areas is able to purchase at a reduced price, but you can buy more. If you live outside of those areas, or if you live in the areas, you can purchase additional rain barrels. Each additional rain barrel will cost you $49.50.
The Rain Barrel Program continues to be popular since its inception in 2013. The following are some of the other benefits that people get from using the rain barrel water:
- Washing vehicles
- Conserving a natural resource
- The water is captured and used and it "reduces the number of surface pollutants introduced into the local watershed."
The barrel comes with a mesh lid that can be securely fastened to the barrel to prevent mosquitoes from getting into the apparatus. The barrel holds 55 gallons of water.
