GONZALES, La. (AP) — Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley is calling on Sorrento town officials to resolve the issue of who will provide law enforcement services for the town.

Wiley says he's prepared to act as the long-term provider of law enforcement services but it will mean hiring additional deputies and a cost that the town might find difficult to bear.

In the meantime, the sheriff has offered to provide law enforcement from Tuesday through Dec. 31 under a contract that would cost the town $37,251.

The mayor and council are mulling the offer while also reviewing the possibility of keeping the town's police department and securing a new insurer willing to insure the police department at a cost the town can afford.
