System Wide Shutdown – Texas Post Offices to Close One Day Next Week

Like many other places in America shoppers in Texas are growing more and more dependent on home delivery. You can get your groceries delivered in Dallas. You can get a new car delivered in Austin. Heck, you can even get a slab of slow-smoked Texas brisket delivered to your office in Fort Worth, Denton, and Dalhart too.

But when it comes to delivery, for most Texans our first thought is of the Post Office and U.S. Postal Service. Across the country, there are more than 30,000 United States Postal Service-managed retail offices. And just about every community of any size in Texas has at least one.

And next week each and every one of those Texas Post Offices will be closing for one day. The closing will certainly affect home mail delivery. What we do need to clarify for you is that the closure will only affect USPS offices and home delivery authorized by the United States Postal Service.

If you have parcels, packages, letters, and other correspondence that is being handled by United Parcel Service or Fed Ex, those shipments should not be affected and your delivery time should not be delayed.

Still, when you shut down an entity that processes and delivers more than 318 million pieces of mail each day there's a good chance that you or someone you know will be affected. We mention that so that you might plan accordingly.

If you do have a package, parcel, or letter that needs to be delivered next week, just know that delivery could be delayed by at least a day because of the system-wide shutdown of the postal service on Monday, February 17, 2025.

No, the Post Office isn't shutting down because of a new Executive Order from President Trump. The reason why the thousands of post office branches will be closed is actually explained very easily. On Monday, February 17th the nation will celebrate Presidents Day. 

President's Day is a federal holiday and all federal offices will be closed. President's Day marks the third postal holiday of the year. The other two were New Year's Day and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.  The remaining federal holidays that will prompt a post office closure are:

May 26 – Memorial Day
June 19 – Juneteenth National Independence Day
July 4- Independence Day
Sept. 1- Labor Day
Oct. 13- Columbus Day
Nov. 11- Veterans Day
Nov. 27 – Thanksgiving Day
Dec. 25- Christmas Day

Regular post office hours and services will resume at their normal times on Tuesday, February 18th.
