Remember that temporary 1-cent tax that Lafayette voters agreed to give Lafayette Regional Airport for the construction of a new terminal? Well, now that money is beginning to pay off.

Thursday, airport officials broke ground on the new terminal that was made possible by the approximately $30 million that was collected from April to November of 2016, along with a $10 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration and an earlier $11.8 million grant that the airport received.

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy and Governor John Bel Edwards were both on hand for the groundbreaking.

The expansion project is expected to take about two years to complete.
