UPS Cutting 20,000 Jobs After Amazon Split, Will Louisiana Be Hit?
KNGT | Louisiana — Here we go again. Another national corporation is preparing to fire 20,000 employees. Where are they going to be cut? Given that Louisiana has 132 locations, it's likely that one of your neighbors may be negatively impacted by the state's shifting economic landscape.
The United Parcel Service, or UPS as everyone knows it, is the source of the news, which is presented in a brown and yellow container. Why are so many jobs being eliminated? The NY Daily News claims that this is because they have chosen to break up with Amazon, Just like that girl you dumped in the 8th grade. Which will undoubtedly lead to job losses here in Louisiana.
From Lake Charles to New Orleans, Shreveport to Lafayette, UPS drivers and their brown uniforms are a part of our everyday lives. Regardless of the weather or the time of day, these are the men and women who throw parcels onto porches, gently, we hope. How often do they visit your workplace each day?
You can expect that Louisiana will be affected if the South experiences layoffs and closures. Slower and less frequent delivery are a serious possibility given the company's 132 sites and the need to save costs.

Why is UPS laying off in Louisiana?
It may surprise you to learn that UPS decided to reduce its Amazon operations. Why you might ask? As it happens, it's not very profitable. According to CBS News, UPS is currently concentrating on "domestic margins" and "revenue quality." The phrase "we're tightening the belt and you're going to feel it" is corporate jargon of course.
Louisiana's bottom line? Get ready. Some of our 132 locations may be cut if UPS begins to reduce facilities. Drivers are protected by Teamsters' contracts, but management and support workers are not as protected. So perhaps wave to your driver. Soon, their path might be different.
