Walmart Halts Sale Of Certain Ammunition, Bans Open Carry

Walmart says it will stop the sale of certain ammunition in its stores in the wake of two shootings at stores over the summer. The nation's largest retailer will stop selling handgun and short-barrel rifle ammunition when it runs out of current inventory. The company also unveiled a new policy banning open carry in states where it's legal.

“We have a long heritage as a company of serving responsible hunters and sportsmen and women, and we’re going to continue doing so,” according to Walmart’s CEO Doug McMillon. The full letter to Walmart employees was posted online.

• After selling through our current inventory commitments, we will discontinue sales of short-barrel rifle ammunition such as the .223 caliber and 5.56 caliber that, while commonly used in some hunting rifles, can also be used in large capacity clips on military-style weapons;

• We will sell through and discontinue handgun ammunition; and

• We will discontinue handgun sales in Alaska, marking our complete exit from handguns.

The policies are being implemented at both Walmart and Sam's Club stores.
