Zachary Considers Tobacco Ban On City Property
ZACHARY, La. (AP) — All smoking and tobacco use soon could be banned on Zachary city property.
The Advocate reports the city council voted unanimously Tuesday to introduce an ordinance that would prohibit the use of any kind of tobacco outside of buildings and at other property owned by the city, including at the Zachary Youth Park.
Mayor David Amrhein says the proposal was made in response to problems at the Zachary Food Pantry and the park.
The law would not make tobacco use on city property a criminal offense, meaning that people could not be arrested for violations.
Amrhein says smoking is already prohibited inside city buildings and vehicles.
A public hearing must be held on the issue before a the law can be adopted.
