A 50-year-old Louisiana man died on Sunday in West Feliciana Parish after a tree fell on his vehicle, causing him to run off the road.

According to Louisiana State Police, troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on LA 965, east of US 61 shortly after 3:30 pm on Sunday, January 5.

Jaime Hernandez, 50, of Zachary was the man killed in the crash, authorities confirmed.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Hernandez was traveling eastbound on LA 965 in a 2014 Jeep Wrangler when for reasons still under investigation, a falling tree struck a portion of the vehicle. That caused Hernandez to run off the roadway to the left, hitting multiple other trees.

State Police said Hernandez was not wearing a seat belt, had serious injuries, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Impairment is unknown at this time, but a standard toxicology sample was taken and submitted for analysis.

Inclement weather could have been a factor.

The crash remains under investigation and authorities will release new information should it be deemed necessary.

WAFB in Baton Rouge reported that Hernandez was a beloved chef at the St. Francisville Inn.

The popular restaurant took to social media with a heartfelt tribute to the cherished member of their team.

The post read in part: "Jaime was a cherished member of the St.Francisville Inn family, and we are devastated by this tragic news. Please keep Chef Jaime’s loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this time. "
