
Lafayette Pedestrian Killed After Being Hit by Truck
LAFAYETTE, La. - One person has died after being hit by a vehicle in the early Monday morning in Lafayette.

What Happened on the Evangeline Thruway?
Officers with the Lafayette Police Department were dispatched to the 100 block of SE Evangeline Thruway at 12:21 a.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026, in reference to a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.

Upon arrival, it was learned that a truck was driving northbound when, for unknown reasons, veered off the roadway to the left and onto a sidewalk. While on the sidewalk, the truck struck a pedestrian.
Truck Crashes Into Utility Poles
The truck then reentered the roadway and continued northbound on the NE Evangeline Thruway. Shortly afterward, the truck veered off the roadway again, this time to the right, and struck several utility poles before coming to a stop near the intersection of N. Magnolia Street and E. Simcoe Street.
Pedestrian Identified as Lafayette Man
Unfortunately, the pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The pedestrian has been identified as 66-year-old Wilbert Davis of Lafayette.
The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries. No other information has been released at this time.
Lafayette Police Investigating Fatal Crash
The crash remains under investigation by the Lafayette Police Department Traffic Unit. We'll provide more information as it becomes available.
