Zoosiana Welcomes Baby Giraffe and Names Her Millie

With coronavirus, hurricane season, and LSU's two losses, Louisiana is in a rare slump. But we do have some good news to report, which is awesome. Zoosiana, the Zoo of Acadiana has announced that they have a new family member, a female baby giraffe they have named Millie.

Millie's mother Evangeline gave birth to the baby calf on Sunday, October 11, and she is about five feet tall, and weighs 130 lbs. Millie joins her sister Josie, and father Gabriel at the zoo, which is located at 5601 US Hwy 90 East in Broussard. Millie was named after the late Melinda Mangham, a longtime Acadiana educator who passed away earlier this year. According to Zoosiana's Matt Oldenberg, who told KLFY “Millie helps to represent, using a phrase Mrs. Mangham often used, ‘all things wise and wonderful, bright and beautiful."

A press release from Zoosiana states that Millie is just drinking milk right now, but most giraffes eat a specialized blend of foods, which include alfalfa hay and pelleted feed.

Guests can take a peek at the new arrival during the month of October when Zoosiana celebrates "Boo at the Zoo". This year the traditional holiday celebration will encompass the entire moth of October, and will include a virtual costume contest, trick or treat bags for kids 12 and under, spooky Halloween decorations throughout the property, and no special event pricing. The zoo is open 9:00 am - 5:00 pm seven days a week, all year long. Go by and say hello to Millie for us!
