Major Bank Outage Affects Customers in Louisiana, Some Accounts Show Zero Balance
Customers of Bank of America in Louisiana and across the country were hit with a concerning issue on Wednesday afternoon as many reported seeing their account balances drop to zero due to a major outage. The incident, which began around 12:47 p.m., was tracked by Downdetector, a service that monitors disruptions to technology services.
Reports of the outage spread rapidly on social media, with users sharing their concerns about empty balances. One user noted that while their online account showed a zero balance, a call to the automated phone system of Bank of America provided the correct balance, offering some reassurance to affected customers.
Bank of America’s official help line on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) responded to users by directing them to an automated link for further assistance.
The outage appears to have primarily affected the visibility of account balances rather than the actual funds, which remained intact despite the technical hiccup. In response to the situation, a spokesperson for Bank of America issued a statement to FOX Business, saying: "Some clients are experiencing an issue accessing their accounts and balance information today. These issues are being addressed and have largely been resolved. We apologize for any inconvenience."
Bank of America, the second largest bank in the U.S. with 69 million domestic consumer and small business clients, reassured customers that efforts were underway to fully resolve the issue. As of Wednesday evening, most of the problems had reportedly been fixed.
For those in Louisiana affected by this outage, the bank advises checking their accounts via alternative methods such as calling the automated line if online information appears incorrect. Customers are encouraged to remain patient as the technical team works to fully restore all services.
Despite the unsettling glitch, shares of Bank of America ended the day relatively unchanged, maintaining a gain of over 16% this year, which is just slightly below the S&P 500's gain of nearly 20%, according to FOX News.
