Two Louisiana Cities Rank Among Least Safe Cities in America, Study Finds
If you're from Louisiana, you probably won't like what you see in this new report from WalletHub. According to a new study, Louisiana's two largest cities, Baton Rouge and New Orleans, have ranked near the bottom in safety, placing them among the least safe cities in America. Baton Rouge was ranked 179th and New Orleans 178th out of 182 cities analyzed, giving Louisiana the proud distinction of hosting two of the least safe urban areas in the country.
WalletHub's "Safest Cities in America" report for 2024 evaluated over 180 cities based on 41 key metrics, including traffic fatalities, assaults per capita, unemployment rates, and the percentage of the uninsured population. According to these findings, both Baton Rouge and New Orleans came in dead last for home and community safety, which highlights the public challenges in efforts to reduce crime, accidents, and other community risks.
While Baton Rouge and New Orleans occupy two of the bottom five spots, Shreveport also placed low at 155th, showing that public safety remains a pervasive concern across much of the state. Lafayette, notably absent from the list, may not have been evaluated due to city size considerations, but the rest of Louisiana's urban centers, unfortunately, have a clear struggle with safety.
The rankings are concerning against the backdrop of over 400 mass shootings and nearly 25,000 motor vehicle deaths reported across the United States this year alone. The WalletHub report aims to inform residents about the physical and financial safety levels of their cities by comparing factors like natural disaster risks and economic stability alongside crime statistics.
On the flip side, the top-ranked cities for safety include South Burlington, Vermont, and Casper, Wyoming, both scoring well across a range of community, financial, and environmental safety metrics. Virginia Beach, Virginia, was found to have the fewest aggravated assault incidents, while Warwick, Rhode Island, had the lowest rates of theft per capita.
The good news about the low rankings in the Louisiana cities is that efforts have been made to find city leaders and community members in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Shreveport to focus on initiatives that could address safety concerns. The key may lie in reducing crime rates, improving community services, and enhancing financial stability—if successful, efforts could help move Louisiana's cities up in future rankings and create safer environments for residents.
For now, Baton Rouge and New Orleans residents are navigating safety challenges compared to the rest of the nation, and the report will only fuel ongoing efforts to make those troubled communities safer.
