Cpl Bridgette Dugas Says Drop in Crime is Encouraging for Department
Corporal Bridgette Dugas of the Lafayette Police Department joined Acadiana's Morning News to comment on the new stats that show a 7% drop in reported crime in Lafayette.
New stats released by Lafayette Police show a drop in reports of crime between 2018 and 2019. Overall reports of crime decreased by 7% with notable drops in rape, robbery, assault, and car theft. Reports of homicides and burglary spiked year-to-year. There was a 55% increase in homicides in 2019.
The numbers reflect the sixth straight year crime rates either dropped or stayed flat in Lafayette. Reports of crime were at their highest in 2013.
There were 10,543 arrests by Lafayette Police in 2019. That's up 6% from 2019. The number of arrests of individuals under the age of 18 was up 22%.
