THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — An inmate who escaped from the Transitional Work Program Facility in Raceland has been captured in Houma.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre said Monday that 37-year-old Michael Matherne escaped from custody sometime after 10 p.m. Friday. Webre says Matherne was arrested Saturday shortly before 1 p.m. when Houma Police officers found him driving a stolen pickup truck.

Matherne was serving an eight-year prison term and had been assigned as a trustee to work in the kitchen at the transitional facility. Trustees also perform custodial work and other jobs at parish facilities, clean up after parades and festivals and provide grass cutting services around bridges and public buildings.

Webre says the circumstances that led to Matherne's escape are under investigation.
