Late last month, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a list of 9 brands of sanitizer sold by Mexican company Eskbiochem SA de CV deemed to be unsafe.  Reportedly, the toxins in these products could leach into your body through your skin causing methanol poisoning.  This poisoning can manifest as nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death.  These are the sanitizers outlined in that warning:

  • All-Clean Hand Sanitizer
  • Esk Biochem Hand Sanitizer
  • CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 75% Alcohol
  • Lavar 70 Gel Hand Sanitizer
  • The Good Gel Antibacterial Gel Hand Sanitizer
  • CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 80% Alcohol
  • CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 75% Alcohol
  • CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 80% Alcohol
  • Saniderm Advanced Hand Sanitizer

Now, the FDA is expanding that list to include the following 5 sanitizers:

  • Any Hand Sanitizer made by GelGrupo Insoma
  • Mystic Shield Protection (made by Transliquid Technologies)
  • Bersih Hand Sanitizer Gel (made by Soluciones Cosmeticas)
  • Antiseptic Alcohol 70% Topical Solution (made by Soluciones Cosmeticas)
  • Britz Hand Sanitizer (made by Tropicosmeticos)

If you have any of these products, discontinue use immediately!

As if using these products on your skin as intended, the FDA felt compelled to issue this warning:

"Young children who accidentally ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, are most at risk."

According to the latest report from CBS, these sanitizers are toxic because they use wood alcohol instead of the industry standard (and safe) isopropyl alcohol.
