High School Band On Probation For Offensive Halftime Show
A high school band in Mississippi will remain on probation and will not be allowed to perform on the field following a ruling by the Mississippi High School Activities Association. The probation comes in the wake of a highly controversial halftime performance in which students pointed fake guns at other students.
What has exacerbated the strong feelings about the Forest Hill High School (Jackson Mississippi) Band is the show came just one week after two Mississippi law enforcement officers were gunned down in the line of duty.
The show was performed in the same town where the two officers lost their lives.
The band's probation prohibits them from performing on the field, traveling to away football games, and they will not be permitted to compete in band competitions for the remainder of the school year. The band may perform from the stands during home football games.
Meanwhile, WJTV in Jackson is reporting that the City Council has adopted a resolution in support of the school and has asked the MHSAA to lift the probation. That resolution asks that the band be allowed to return to on-field performances and it also requests the band's director be reinstated.
