ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) — State Fire Marshal Butch Browning says a house fire near Alexandria killed a 58-year-old man and seriously injured his 93-year-old mother.

Browning tells The Town Talk that Michael Normand and Ruth Normand were trapped in their blazing house Tuesday night. He said deputies got Ruth Normand out through a back door but flames kept them from getting to Michael Normand, a wheelchair user who was unable to get out of bed.

Browning said Ruth Normand remained in intensive care Wednesday at Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital, suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. Browning said the house did not have any working smoke alarms.
