State officials are closing down the oyster harvesting areas from Lake Borgne all the way to Vermillion Bay starting today.

The Department of Health and Hospitals said that this is a safety precaution considering coastal flooding could wash natural contaminants into the rivers, bayous, and streams, where they can affect oysters.

State officials also mentioned that this closure will last until tests can be made on the areas.

Also, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is asking residents to report any fish kills associated with Isaac.

The LDWF says that you can call 1-800-442-2511 to report any fish kills.

The kills are sometimes caused by large amounts of rainfall that erodes organic matter and carries it into bayous and canals. The fish are killed if the organic matter takes high amounts of oxygen from the water itself.
