(KMDL-FM) The National Weather Service has issued its official outlook for the next six to ten days. If you've not been paying attention, that means the weather service has issued the forecast for Santa's flight into South Louisiana, as well as what we can expect for present opening on Christmas morning and Christmas Day.

But before we get into the outlook for next Wednesday night and Thursday morning, let's take a look at what we'll have to get through today, because we do have some "weather" you're going to want to pay attention to. The good news is I don't think we'll be facing severe weather or flooding rains. But there is a threat of showers.

The National Weather Service Radar at this early hour is showing light to moderate rain showers mainly over southeastern Texas. You can see the radar scan from 1 am below. Most of the activity that is showing up over Louisiana is not even reaching the ground or is falling as very light mist or drizzle.

Rain chances today, according to the National Weather Service, will be minimal, about 20% or 30% depending on where in the state you happen to be. Best chances for showers appear to be between 9 am and Noon today, between 4 am and 5 am tomorrow, and then another threat of showers between Noon and three on Thursday.

When Is The First Day of Winter?

Forecasters are suggesting another threat of showers, again very slight, for Sunday and Monday. Here's an ironic footnote for Sunday's forecast. The high temperature on Sunday is forecast to be almost 80 degrees. Sunday is also the first day of Winter.  Only in Louisiana, right?

Following that slight risk of rain over the weekend, the rest of the ramp-up into Christmas Day should be partly cloudy and mild. No, it won't "feel" like Christmas as far as the temperature is concerned, but it also won't be too hot.

Currently, the Weather Experts at KATC TV 3 in Lafayette have the Christmas Day forecast posted to be partly cloudy with a high of 74. By the way, the low on Christmas Morning should be in the upper 50s.

What are the Record High and Record Low for Christmas Day in Lafayette?

That is a far cry from Christmas Day 1983, when Lafayette Regional recorded an overnight low temperature of 12 degrees.  Meanwhile, just ten years ago in 2015, Lafayette Regional recorded Lafayette's highest temperature on Christmas with a daytime high of 82 degrees. So, we're going to be somewhere in the middle with no rain for Christmas.
