Police responded to a shooting just off the campus of UL Wednesday afternoon near Huger Hall.

Multiple listeners called in about an alert they received about a shooting on the campus near Taft Street.

An image we received on Wednesday showed a large police presence, including officers and police units from UL PD and the Lafayette Police Department.

An initial report from KLFY claimed that a UL spokesperson did confirm a shooting happened on campus Wednesday afternoon.

Reactions poured in on social media as well in regard to the alleged shooting.

Eyewitnesses described the scene with yellow tape and a student allegedly said she saw at least one person on a stretcher.

Sr. Cpl. Matthew Benoit with the Lafayette Police Department confirmed there was a shooting right off campus that stemmed from a fight that happened in a nearby parking lot off Tulane Avenue not far from Huger Hall.

Just after 5:00 p.m., Lafayette Police Officers responded to the 600 block of Tulane Avenue regarding a shooting in progress. Officers arrived on scene and located a male suffering from a gunshot wound. Preliminary investigation indicated several individuals were involved in a fight which occurred in a parking lot. During that fight one of the individuals pulled a firearm and the shot the victim.

Benoit says an 18-year-old victim was transported to a local hospital where he is currently listed in stable but critical condition. According to a report from The Advocate, the 18-year-old shooting victim is a University of Louisiana at Lafayette student.

Investigators remain on the scene and the investigation is still ongoing.
