LPSS Elementary Schools Return To Full-Time, In-Person Classes on Sept 14th
Lafayette Parish's youngest students will be able to return to the classroom full-time on Monday, September 14th. That's about a month before the district had hoped to try to return. The news was first announced on KPEL's Acadiana's Morning News. Superintendent Irma Trosclair tells Rob Kirkpatrick and Bernadette Lee that it's a key part of a revised Learn Lafayette Plan. The new plan removes "staggered" school days for PreK through 5th grade starting on September 14th. Families who are enrolled in the Lafayette Online Academy will have until September 3rd to change that registration. According to the revised calendar posted below, those elementary school students will be back in the classroom beginning in the second week of the school year.
Trosclair credits the dedication of residents in the parish to adhere to spread mitigation efforts and therefore lowering the infection rate. Enrollment was high, as expected, for the district's online-only instruction model. The Lafayette Online Academy had enough students enroll that campuses were able to adequately social distance. That number of total enrollments totaled about 30% of elementary students.
There is one point of clarification regarding students enrolled in Lafayette Online Academy. If a family enrolled in online-only learning wants change and go back to their school, that must be done by September 3rd.
