Lafayette Hunter’s Record-Breaking Louisiana Black Bear Kill Sparks Backlash
A hunter from Lafayette is at the center of a heated debate after killing what might be the biggest black bear in Louisiana’s history. The bear was part of the state’s first black bear hunting season in 35 years, but not everyone is celebrating. Instead, many people are angry and sad, filling social media with comments about whether this hunt should have happened at all.
The hunter, Deron Santiny, shot the 696-pound bear during a special hunting season where only 11 people were allowed to hunt. Some say the hunt proves that the black bear population has grown enough to handle it, but others feel it was wrong to kill such a special animal.
“Why Kill Such a Beautiful Creature?”
On social media, most people seemed upset about the hunt. “Why would anyone want to kill this beautiful animal?” one person asked. Another said, “Look at the face of the dead bear. It’s so sad to see something so amazing get killed just for someone’s pride.”
Many people are worried that hunting black bears might undo all the hard work that saved them from extinction. “It hasn’t even been 10 years since they were taken off the endangered list, and now we’re hunting them? It doesn’t make sense,” one comment read.
Trophy or Conservation?
Some people think the hunt was okay because it was part of a plan to manage the bear population. They argue that if bears aren’t hunted, their numbers could grow too much, which might cause problems. “Hunting helps keep the population under control,” one supporter said.
But critics didn’t agree. “If it’s about population control, why not move the bears somewhere else instead of killing them?” someone suggested. Others felt the picture of the hunter smiling next to the bear made things worse. “Why share a photo of a dead bear like it’s a trophy? That’s just wrong,” a commenter said.
A Community Divided
Some people congratulated the hunter, saying he followed the law and used the bear’s meat and fur. Others felt it wasn’t about the law but about whether this was the right thing to do. “Was this really necessary? And even if it was, why act like it’s something to be proud of?” one person asked.
This debate has left many wondering: Was this hunt a success for conservation or a failure for the black bear? And if the hunt was needed, should it have been shared in such a public and celebratory way? The answers might not be easy, but the picture of the bear has sparked thousands of comments from many with strong feelings for and against the hunt.
